PAWPAW ROD
How do you utilize cannabis in your work?
Man, I compare it to like a boxer going back to his corner after a round. After I lay down like a few lines or something, I go back and roll something up. Think about what I just did, how can I make it better? How I can move around. What's lacking? You know, stuff like that
If you could give yourself advice a year ago, what would you say?
I'd say man, be kind to yourself. Especially artists are super hard on ourselves. I was just talking to my buddy. And he's always saying “perfection killed the artist, perfection killed the artist.” And I mean, it's one of those things where, if it doesn't look exactly how it was in your head, you know, you may hate it, or like not show it the love that it deserves. So I mean, I'm trying to be better at that, you know, being kind of myself.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve experienced high?
My brother, the strain was blue dream, the location was Austin, Texas. The event was South by Southwest. And anybody that was there that year would know what I'm talking about. There was a car going around, and they were throwing out a bunch of swishers. We grabbed like five of them. And we went to Dam Funk and Peanut Butter Wolf show—there was probably about like, 1800 people in the crowd. I'm super faded. Blunt in my mouth. I'm just like, bro, I'm gonna go to the front of the stage and I'm getting this fool to hand me the mic. I don't know why. I guess it was just a weed confidence or something. I go up to the front and I'm like “Dam Funk bro. Please let me rap bro. Please let me rap something please. I'll give you this blunt. Come on, bro.” And he’s just looking at me like I'm crazy. But I don't know, he sees me smoking. And he's like, (gives a thumbs up) I'm just like, come on, bro. Like halfway through his set, he's just annoyed from me saying that, and he hands me the mic and I just started spitting a verse that came into my head. And like the crowd thinks is a part of the show. Like somebody's just like, handing me more weed, my homies in the very back were just like, “ROD, ROD!”. I run back to them. I'm like I'm done. Let's go still after that. We just kept smoking. I think it was the blue dream and I'm not really like a sativa type of do but that's what it did for me.
What project are you working on now?
Well, I go by Paw Paw Rod as my music name. You can find it anywhere. I just had a project come out last September called the PawPaw Rod EP. Working on some new music right now. So I'll be around.
